The information below explains the various connection types for GPS makes.


Different ways a GPS Connects to a PC

This lists all the different ways a GPS can connect to a PC

Serial GPS

Connect the GPS serial cable to the COM port of your computer taking a note of the COM port number you have connected to (some computers may have the ports marked COM1, COM2 or Serial 1, Serial 2. Check the manual for your computer). In OziExplorer configuration, select this as the Com port to use.
 

Garmin USB GPS

These plug directly into a USB port and do not require a serial port at all.
 

Magellan USB GPS

These plug directly into a USB port. When the GPS is set to NMEA Data Comm Mode the GPS creates a new Serial Port on the PC and connects to the PC as a Modem on the Serial Port. NMEA data is transmitted through the serial port. If you do not know the port number, the GpsPortChecker will help locate the port number used or check the port number in Windows Settings / Control Panel / System / Device Manager (in the Modems section). In OziExplorer configuration, select this as the Com port to use.
 

USB Mouse Type GPS

The GPS will come with a driver which will add a virtual serial port to your PC when you install the driver.

You need to note the port number which is configured by the driver.  If you do not know the port number, the GpsPortChecker will help locate the port number used or check the port number in Windows Settings / Control Panel / System / Device Manager. In OziExplorer configuration, select this as the Com port to use.
 

Compact Flash or SDIO GPS

The plug-in compact flash type GPS will add a virtual serial port to your PC when you install the driver. Some may be supplied with a driver which you need to install (SDIO GPS) but most will not require a driver.

You need to note the port number which is configured by the driver.  If you do not know the port number, the GpsPortChecker program will help locate the port number used or check the port number in Windows Settings / Control Panel / System / Device Manager. In OziExplorer configuration, select this as the Com Port to use.
 

Bluetooth GPS

You need to know the serial port (COM port number) configured by Bluetooth on your computer. If you do not know the port number, the GpsPortChecker will help locate the port number used or check the port number in Windows Settings / Control Panel / System / Device Manager. In OziExplorer configuration, select this as the Com port to use.
