The Hema Navigator HN5 (and later models)
The HN5 and later models have, supplied with the navigator, the Hema
Navigator Explorer software which runs on the PC computer and interfaces with
the navigator. It allows plotting and transfer of Waypoints, Tracks and
Routes to and from the Hema Navigator.
NOTE: The HN7 comes supplied with
HN Explorer, software which interfaces with the HN7 and can perform many of the
operations below.
Using the Hema Navigator (HN) with
PC OziExplorer
PC OziExplorer cannot read and write files
direct to the HN, then HN connects to the PC using ActiveSync which means it can be
seen as a device in Windows Explorer. Files must be copied using Windows
Explorer to folders on your Hard Disk, PC OziExplorer can then access the files
from there.
NOTE: PC OziExplorer cannot be used with the Hema
Navigator for moving map (real time tracking), the Hema Navigator does not
output NMEA data to a external port.
Connecting to a PC using ActiveSync
When you connect the HN to the PC using a USB connection it will connect
using ActiveSync (Windows XP) or Mobile Device Centre (Vista or Windows 7).
You may need to download and install ActiveSync (XP) or Mobile Device Centre
(Vista/7) from Microsofts web site.
By pressing the Explore button on the ActiveSync toolbar you can see the
folder structure of the HN.
The SD card folder is called SDMMC and all the folders and files stored on
the SD card are stored in this folder.
You can use Windows Explorer to copy files to and from the PC and the
HN by dragging files across the windows.
Copying Files using an SD Card Reader
If you remove the SD card from the HN and use a card reader to copy your
files - after you insert the card back into the HN you must reset the HN so it can recognize the changes made on the
card.
Maps
The maps supplied with the HN can be used with PC OziExplorer.
The maps must be copied from the HN to folders under the OziExplorer/Maps folder
on the PC. You can use ActiveSync to copy the files but it will be slow for the
larger files. For faster transfer use an SD card reader.
The maps on the HN are located in the folders listed below.
File Locations
Data Files
Data files for OziExplorer are stored in the "\SDMMC\OziExplorer Data" folder
on the HN. All the waypoint, track and route files are stored here.
The OziExplorerCE waypoints are stored in a
file called ceWaypoints.wpb, this file cannot be read by PC OziExplorer so you
must export the waypoints from OziExplorerCE.
Maps
Maps for OziExplorer are stored in folders
located under the "\SDMMC\OziExplorer Maps" folder on
the HN.
The map folders under this path are called:
Australia 250K Maps
Hema General Maps
Hema Regional Maps
It is ok to put your own maps into any of these
3 folders.
Note - maps placed directly into the "\SDMMC\OziExplorer Maps"
folder will not be found as it is not a configured path in OziExplorerCE.
If you want to create a new folder for you maps
you must add the folder path into OziExplorerCE configuration.
To do this - On the Configuration page press
the "Map/Data Folders" button - a dialog will appear where the "Map File Paths"
can be entered.
On an empty line click the ... button - a "Get Path" dialog
will appear, navigate to the path you want to use and double click on it to make
sure it is open - press the OK button to select it.
Check the added path is correct - Press the OK button on the dialog to save the configuration.
Transferring Additional Maps from your PC to the Hema
Navigator
- Additional maps can be transferred to the SD
card using Windows Explore.
- EITHER - connect the Hema Navigator to your PC
Computer with ActiveSync running
- OR - take the card from the HN and put it into a card reader on your PC.
- Click the Explore option on the
ActiveSync dialog to run the Explore file manager.
- Navigate to the folder on the Hema Navigator
SD Card where you want to store the additional maps
(eg. Create a new folder UNDER the "OziExplorer Maps" folder on the SD card
such as "ExtraMaps")
- Open Windows Explorer on your PC Computer
- For each map, TWO files must be
copied the map image (.OZF2, .OZFx3, OZF4) and the map file (.map)
- Select the maps you want to copy from the
hard drive or CD / DVD
- Using the mouse, drag and drop the selected
files on to the ActiveSync Explore window
- On releasing the mouse the file will be
copied.
NOTE : If the maps have not been copied to the
OziExplorer Maps folder on the SD Card on your Hema Navigator and have been
copied to a different folder on the SD Card, the path to the new folder must be
added to the OziExplorerCE / Configuration / Map and Data Files.
Transferring Data to and From your PC
Most of the methods below
require the main menu system in the HN to be visible, this is how to make it
visible.

on the
Menubar to goto the Options menu.
- Press the Main Menu button - this

PC OziExplorer to the Hema Navigator
NOTE 1 : This method should only be done if you want
to replace all the waypoints in the HN with the ones you are transferring
from the PC as the waypoints in the HN will be deleted first.
You should back-up the waypoints in the HN by using Windows
Explorer to copy ceWaypoints.wpb file from the HN into a folder on the PC first,
just in case something goes wrong.
NOTE 2 : OziExplorerCE stores its waypoints in sets, so it is
also possible by using the Waypoints Set List to Export (save) a specific waypoint set for use in PC OziExplorer
(see below).
- You prepare the waypoints in PC OziExplorer and saved them
to a file on the PC.
- Use Windows Explorer to copy the waypoint
file to the data files path (see above) on the HN.

- A dialog will be displayed and you can
select the file you want to load.
- Press the OK button on the top right
of the dialog to import the file.
Transferring a Waypoint Set from

Explorer to copy ceWaypoints.wpb file from the HN into a folder on the PC first,
just in case something goes wrong.
- You prepare the waypoints in PC OziExplorer and save them
to a file on the PC.
- Use Windows Explorer to copy the waypoint
file to the data files path (see above) on the HN.

to remove the duplicate waypoints.
Tracks
Transferring the Track Log from
the Hema Navigator to OziExplorer
- The track log file is called ceTrack.plt
and is stored in the data files path on the HN. It will only exist if
the "Log Track to File" option has been turned on in OziExplorerCE.
- Use Windows Explorer to transfer the
ceTrack.plt file to a folder on the PC hard disk so it can be opened by PC
OziExplorer.
Transferring Tracks from PC

by OziExplorerCE to show a short section of the most recent track on the map.
However it can be exported to a standard OziExplorer track if desired.
