Configuration

When you open the Configuration window, you will see several pages with name tabs describing the topic each page relates to.  Many of the configuration options will work for you as they have been set up with default settings and may not require changing. For full details see Configuration section of Help.

Here are some of the settings which are important to configure so that OziExplorer works correctly for you.

System Tab - File Paths

• Map File Path - is the Folder where you will keep the map (.map) files for your map images. By clicking on the open folder icon, you can select a different folder. OziExplorer will always look in this folder and its subfolders for maps, the default is a folder called MAPS under the Oziexplorer folder. You could create subfolders under the MAPS folder to separate your maps into various categories.
• Data File Path - is the Folder where the data files are stored, the default is a folder called DATA under the Oziexplorer directory. By clicking on the open folder icon, you can select a different folder. An example of a data file is one containing a group of waypoints which you have saved.

To change the Map or Data File Path, click on the folder button on the right of the entry box to display the Select Directory dialog and select the folder where your maps are located.

Maps Tab

• Units - Specify the units (distance, speed, altitude) you prefer.
• Country or Region - Select your country or if not in the list, select the region of the world you are in. When entering geographic positions this causes the N/S or E/W field to default to a choice valid for the region you select.

GPS Tab

GPS Make and Model

(There is specific information on different makes in the "GPS Receivers" section of Help.)

Use the "Find GPS Port" button to determine the GPS you have connected and report the settings you need to help you configure OziExplorer. Note: your GPS must be connected and turned on.

GPS Make and Model - Select the make and model of GPS you have from the lists provided.  If your model is not in the list you can select "Other" (example "Other Garmin").

When you select a GPS make and model the GPS parameters are automatically filled in, DO NOT assume that the parameters are correct for all GPS Receivers, check the features of your GPS in the manual and enter the correct values.

GPS Upload/Download Datum - Specifies the Datum OziExplorer will use when it uploads data (waypoints, tracks etc) to the GPS and the Datum it assumes the data is in when it is downloaded to OziExplorer from the GPS. See "Datums" help for more information.

• Garmins and Magellans always use the WGS 84 datum when uploading/downloading data.
• Lowrance/Eagles vary, some use the datum the GPS is set to and others always use WGS 84.
• MLR use whatever datum the GPS is currently set to when uploading/downloading data.

GPS NMEA Output Datum - Specifies the Datum the GPS sends its NMEA position data in.

• Garmins always send it in the datum you have your GPS set to.
• Most Lowrance/Eagles always send it in WGS 84 others send it in the datum the GPS is set to.
• For Magellans you need to check this, some models output in WGS84 and others such as the 315/320 output in the Datum the GPS is set to.
• The MLR always sends the NMEA positions in whatever datum the GPS is currently set to.

COM Tab

(There is more detailed information on different makes in the "GPS Receivers" section of Help.)

Set the COM settings to the following.

• Mouse Type GPS - With the GPS connected, use the "Find GPS Port" button on the GPS tab to determine the settings.
• Garmin USB makes - tick Garmin USB and Use PVT for Garmin instead of NMEA options.
• Garmin Serial GPS - normally use a Upload/download Baud of 9600 with no parity so set the parameters to these figures. The GPS interface (set within the GPS) must be set to GRMN/GRMN to upload/download waypoints. Parity none and 8 data  bits for the other settings.
• For Lowrance & Eagle GPS receivers you must set to match the setting you have in the GPS. Set the Upload/download BAUD rate to as high as possible (normally 19200) in both the GPS and OziExplorer. Set the other parameters to match the settings in the GPS.
• For Magellans GPS receivers you must set to match the setting you have in the GPS. Set the Upload/download BAUD rate to 9600 in both the GPS and OziExplorer, Magellans also allow a Baud rate of 19200 but this does not always work and if this is the case for your GPS then 9600 seems to be the best choice. Set the other parameters to parity none and 8 data bits.
• For MLR GPS receivers set the Upload/Download Baud rate to match the setting you have in your GPS. Note : This may always need to be 4800 for MLR's.
